*Important note to all students regarding insurance while studying: All students, both European and non-European, need to make sure they are adequately insured against accident, injury and ill-health while participating in an Erasmus Mundus Masters Course outside their home country. Personal medical cover is required in most European countries, even those which have a public health system. You may also want to consider travel insurance, which protects you, your travel documents and your belongings while you are away from home.

Information on the Scholarships, Fees and Expenses is provided separately below for third-country nationals and European nationals, including new funding possibilities for Europeans (see below).

Below you can find more information on the Erasmus Mundus Programme of the European Union.

The Erasmus Mundus programme is a co-operation and mobility programme in the field of higher education. It aims to enhance quality in European higher education and to promote intercultural understanding through co-operation with third countries.

The programme is intended to strengthen European co-operation and international links in higher education by supporting high-quality European Masters Courses, by enabling students and visiting scholars from around the world to engage in postgraduate study at European universities, as well as by encouraging the outgoing mobility of European students and scholars towards third countries.

For European nationals

European students are not eligible for the Erasmus Mundus scholarships according to EU regulations. Therefore, there are no scholarships available for EU students that can cover the whole 2-year duration of the MSc European Forestry.

However, through the recently approved Global Partnership for MSc European Forestry programme, European nationals can now benefit of the 3-month scholarships for carrying out part of the MSc EF studies at one of following Universities:

  • University of KwaZulu Natal in South Africa
  • Federal University of Parana in Brazil
  • Northwest Agriculture & Forestry University in China

This scholarship amounts to 3,100 EUR [distributed as 700 EUR/month plus a fixed amount 1,000 EUR ].

"European nationals" are defined as coming from the 25 EU Member States, Iceland, Norway and Liechtenstein. These 3-month scholarships are also available for third-country nationals who had been legal residents in the EU for at least three years (and for purpose other than study) before the start of the scholarship.

In addition, European students can apply for EU grants oriented to promote studies abroad, such Erasmus and Leonardo programmes. The student’s home university and the University of Joensuu (as co-ordinating university) will give information and support on how to apply for these scholarships. The MSc EF consortium of universities also encourages the students to look actively for any other kind of scholarship that could be provided to them by any private or public institutions.

In the case of EU students, no Course Fees are charged.

Students are expected to finance their living costs themselves, including their accommodation and travel costs. EU students are advised to arrange a valid insurance in their home countries before starting the programme. The participating universities have services for foreign students that can provide assistance in arranging accommodation and other living arrangements.
