Swedish University of Agricultural Sciences

The Swedish University of Agricultural Sciences (SLU) was established in 1977 but root stretch back more than 200 years. In the middle of the 18th century the initial steps were taken towards higher education, training and research within the subject areas of agriculture, forestry and veterinary medicine. In the 19th century Veterinary Institute was established (1812), as were the Forestry Institute in Stockholm and the Skara Veterinary Institute (1810). Agricultural Institutes were founded in Ultuna in 1848 and Alnarp in 1862.

At the beginning of the 20th century a co-ordination of all the scientific departments was initiated resulting in the formation of the three University Colleges of Agriculture, Forestry and Veterinary Medicine respectively. In 1975, the Boards of the separate Colleges were merged into one, as were a number of other administrative bodies. Eventually, on july 1, 1977, these three University Colleges, the Skinnskatteberg School of Forest Management and the Skara Veterinary Institute formed the Swedish University of Agricultural Sciences - SLU.

SLU is a university with a clearly defined role in society: to take responsibility for the development of learning and expertise in areas concerning biological resources and biological production.
