PREFACE
This bioenergy glossary is a joint project of the University of Joensuu Faculty of Forestry and the Faculty of International Communication in Savonlinna.
The initiative for the creation of the glossary was made by the forestry sector. Bioenergy terminology is young and information about the term definitions and their equivalents in different languages has not been easily available. A group of students at the Faculty of International Communication set out to clarify and catalog bioenergy terminology. The glossary is based on their pro-gradu thesises. Finnish, German and Russian bioenergy professionals were consulted in the creation process.
The staff and equipment of the Text and Media Department of Joensuu University have been of invaluable assistance in the creation of the web glossary.
Members of the staff of the Foreign Languages Department department have borrowed their voices for the recording of the pronunciation models.
Currently the glossary consists of four sections: biogas, greenhouse effect, Short rotation farming and wood-based fuels, each one of which contains 50-100 terms. The most comprehensive glossary is that of wood-based fuels which includes term definitions and translations in Finnish, English, German and Russian.
CONCERNING TERMINOLOGY
The glossary has been created with the Finnish language as the basis. Therefore the term definitions are completely accurate only between Finnish and some other language, not, for example between German and English or English and Russian.
Biogas - The section includes terms in Finnish, German, and Russian. Also Danish terminology is being prepared. In addition to the translations, term definitions are available in all three languages.
Greenhouse effect - The section includes terms in Finnish, English and in German. The term hierarchy used in the creation of German terminology differs from the Finnish-English hierarchy. Because of this, some German terms have been left undefined, although equivalent terms propably exist.
Short rotation farming - The terminology focuses on terms related to the cultivation of energy willow and includes terms in Finnish and German. In addition to models of pronunciation in German, the section includes also some photos.
Wood-based fuels - The most comprehensive glossary. It contains term translations in English, German and Russian, models of pronunciation, photos and a video. Some of the Finnish terms are unknown in some of the other languages, and some terms had to be created. These terms are marked with the symbol *. Most of the Russian terms belong to this category, so they are not distinctively marked with the* - symbol.
Certain compromises had to be made in the creation of the web version to make the editing of HTML documents and browsing the glossary simpler.
The main compromise concerns the transliteration of Cyrillic alphabet into Latin alphabet using the international transliterary standard (picture).
Some Russian letters were lost in the process, but hopefully this will not seriously affect the text's readability.
THE STRUCTURE OF THE GLOSSARY
The bioenergy glossary has been constructed to use three so-called frames, or display windows.
The top of the screen is taken by a menu screen, or menu bar, which will remain unchanged during the browsing of the glossary.
The lower left screen displays the lists of terms, the equivalents and definitions of which will appear on the adjoining screen on the right.
Menu bar
The basic selections are conducted from the menu bar. In the English version, the options include term- and source list and this instructions screen. The Finnish version includes also term maps, which are left out of the English version.
The term lists are displayed in the lower left screen, and the source lists in the adjoining screen on the right.
Lower left screen
The term definitions are accessed by clicking on the terms listed on the lower left screen.

Term lists
The term lists contain all terms in each section in alphabetical order. The links to term lists are located in the menu bar under the heading TERM LISTS. A list is displayed in the lower left screen by clicking on the name of the section in the menu bar.
You can also conduct searches with the browser program's Find-feature.
Click on the appropriate icon on the browser program's menu bar to display the search window on the screen. Then enter the sought string in the window and activate the search. If matches are found, the cursor will move to indicate the beginning of the string's first occurrence.
Term maps
Because of the interlingual variations in the content of the terms, the term maps are only available in the Finnish version.

Lower right screen
The lower right screen is the center of the glossary and will display most of the information.
Term definitions in different languages, equivalent terms, photo- and video pages and links to sound clips containing models of pronunciation are displayed in this screen.
